EYFS IMAGINATIVE AND CREATIVE ACTIVE

Northleaze School, Long Ashton

Children enjoying water play

Northleaze Primary School is a welcoming community school for children aged 5 to 11, with an on-site nursery. They are part of the Lighthouse Schools Partnership, who are a trust we know well, having supported several schools across the group. When the Headteacher and Associate Headteacher planned to leave at the end of the summer term, they were determined to leave a lasting legacy in the EYFS space. Their goal was to boost early years admissions by creating an inspiring outdoor environment that would immediately appeal to new families. At the start of the project, EYFS numbers were low, and the outdoor area had not received meaningful investment for many years. What was in place was a blank tarmac space with very little opportunity for learning or play.

The school’s vision was clear. They wanted an outdoor area that offered purposefully zoned areas reflecting the full EYFS curriculum. They hoped for a space that supported continuous provision and free flow between indoors and outdoors, while also creating strong visual appeal from the moment families entered the site. A natural, engaging and low-maintenance design was essential.

Working closely with the team, our Outdoor Learning Consultant Nicole developed a layout that transformed the empty tarmac into a vibrant and cohesive learning environment. All-weather surfacing was a key priority. The school wanted to move away from the grey tarmac and introduce texture, colour and warmth, while keeping the overall feel calm and natural. Planting and digging areas were incorporated, along with a roadway that doubles as a flowing river to support imaginative play and small world storytelling.

The design process was highly collaborative. Together, we walked the space and identified non-negotiables such as new surfacing, water play, sand play and a dedicated mud area. We also suggested additions that would elevate the provision, including a playhouse for imaginative play & to provide a sheltered space, and moveable blocks for physical development. With a clear budget in mind, the school selected the options that would have the greatest long-term impact.

A thoughtful blend of fixed and moveable items ensures flexibility year-round. New sleepers replaced the old rotten timber along the back of the space, creating fresh opportunities for planting and sensory exploration. Moveable resources such as Great Explorer blocks were included so staff could adapt the layout whenever needed. This was especially important due to the number of manholes and drains in the space, which restricted the placement of larger fixed climbers. By choosing versatile products that can be safely relocated, we ensured the area remains practical, engaging and manageable for staff.

Messy Play

Each zone was built around one key fixed feature, supported by moveable items that can be shared across multiple areas. This approach gives the staff flexibility while keeping the setup simple and low maintenance. The final design supports core areas of EYFS learning including physical development, imaginative play, communication and language, early literacy and maths, understanding the world and personal, social and emotional development.

Feedback from the school has been incredibly positive. Staff have shared how much the children love being outside and how deeply they engage with the new play opportunities. The space is now a true asset for the school, offering a warm and exciting first impression that reflects the value placed on early years learning.
