Weare Academy First School, Somerset

At Weare Academy First School, a warm and welcoming setting that includes its own Pre-School, the Leadership Team had a clear vision: to breathe new life into their outdoor space and create a playground that felt brighter, more inviting, and full of opportunities for every child at the school (aged 2 - 9).
Their existing play area had become a real barrier. It was damp, heavy underfoot, and never truly fit for purpose. The children loved using it for gymnastics, but it just wasn’t suitable as the area never dried out.
Working closely with the Headteachers and Deputy, Chelsey, Oliver and Heather, we set out to transform the space into something extraordinary. By removing the existing surface, and installing a new, vibrant Play Grass, we created an area that dries quickly, feels fantastic underfoot, and provides the perfect stage for gymnastics, active play, and big, bold adventures.

To make the playground even more engaging, we introduced zones of yellow and blue Play Carpet, with flowing wave lines to make the area more playful and inviting.
Another key focus of the install was to provide some fun Active play elements. After consultation with the team around the needs and abilities of the children, we ended up adding Pull Over Bars and a Burma Bridge, as well as some Thermoplastic Markings to provide a football area and space for collaborative games.
The result is a playground that brings together:
- Sports & teamwork: new markings and games like King’s Square to encourage collaboration and healthy competition.
- Active play equipment: designed to strengthen upper body and core muscles, supporting physical development.
- Gymnastics space: a dedicated area for flips, balances, and energetic movement.
Since the transformation, staff have reported that playtimes have become more cohesive and purposeful. Children from across year groups are playing together, sharing activities, and developing new skills in an environment that feels fun, safe, and full of possibilities.
This project shows just how powerful a refreshed space can be - not just for physical play, but for creating community and connection.

The school's Deputy Head, Heather Cooke, was delighted with the project and reported that the children were excited to come in every day during the build process. They had lots of questions and the install team were great in interacting with the children - explaining what they were doing and why.
When the project was completed, Heather says that there was a real buzz around the school and that ever since play times involved children playing really well together; being more imaginative and resilient!
