I have been working as part of the Phoenix team since 2016 and feel privileged to have worked with so many amazing schools transforming and creating unique and purposeful outdoor learning and play spaces that have changed the way in which children (and teachers) learn and play outdoors. My story is one of adventure, starting my early career as a teacher in both mainstream and special needs where I learnt how vital and important outdoor learning can be. After leaving teaching I pursued my own adventures travelling much of the southern hemisphere before returning to the UK and starting my chapter with Phoenix Play.
My favourite part of my job is going on the journey with each new project from start to finish…from blank canvas or frustrated drab environments to designing and installing something unique, long lasting and purposeful that brings joy and meaningful moments and memories for children for years to come. A well designed play space has the chance to unlock individual potential, create a sense of awe and adventure, build resilience to take 'risks' and try something new. It's incredible how skills learnt so early in life become the foundations of our adult selves in years to come.
In my free time play forms a big part of my week. Having a toddler at the centre of my world means every moment of every day we enjoy playing together. Whether it's indoors or outdoors, he loves being active or messy and has the most incredible imagination which has us laughing and having fun whatever the weather. We are lucky enough to have a cat and some pet sheep which makes life lots of fun too.
