Twynyrodyn Community School, Merthyr Tydfil

Twynyrodyn Community School, a vibrant primary setting with its own nursery provision, has a long-standing relationship with Phoenix Play. So, when an opportunity arose to repurpose a previously underused space for their Foundation Phase pupils, the school team once again turned to us to help bring their vision to life.
Working closely with school leadership and teaching staff, we began by listening - understanding their ambitions for the space and the unique needs of their children. Their goals were clear: to create a standout play feature that would spark imagination, support physical development, and cater to a wide age and ability range within the Foundation Phase (EYFS & KS1 equivalent in England).
We designed a bespoke play tower that offers layered challenge - accessible and engaging for the youngest learners, but still exciting and developmentally rich for older pupils. It supports progression in movement, confidence and play-based learning from the very start of a child’s school journey until they move phases.
Another important factor was year-round usability so the space was finished with an artificial grass surface, using our quality Play Grass solution which provides safe, all-weather play. The design allowed for flexible use, leaving open zones for child-led exploration and the integration of moveable equipment. The school selected our Earhart Great Explorer Blocks, a modular 15-piece set designed for building, climbing, imaginative play and collaborative learning - perfect for promoting physical literacy and creative discovery.

What makes this project particularly special is the transformation of what was once a drop-off zone (left picture) into a meaningful, purpose-built play space.
The "after" photo showcases that with clever replanning, the area has now become a playful “village green” at the heart of the school. This focal point now invites storytelling, role play, and social connection, and is adding huge value to the play times at Twynyrodyn Community School.

The project held extra significance as a legacy piece for the outgoing Headteacher, Alec, who wanted to ensure that his final contribution to the school community would benefit generations to come. With a tight deadline ahead of the summer break, our team fast-tracked the installation and delivered the project safely and efficiently.
Alec shared his appreciation, saying:
"the installation process was really simple. Even though it was going on in quite a high traffic area of the school, everything was handled really safely. Children were separated from any of the work that was going on. The team installing always arrived on site in the morning before any parents got here in the morning. We were delighted with how quickly the install happened".
We’re proud to have created a space that goes far beyond play; that leaves a lasting legacy for the pupils and for Alec.
